Committee on Committees

Purpose

The Committee on Committees oversees the governance committee structure, makes recommendations for improvement and vets any proposed changes of the structure. This committee develops the faculty slate to ensure balance of representation on committees. This committee is also responsible for filling any vacancies that may arise and establishing a transitional process to facilitate communication between incoming and outgoing chairs to ensure continuity in the conduct of committee work.

Responsibilities

1. This committee considers and makes recommendations for the establishment, revision, and discontinuance of committees of the faculty; it also proposes the duties of such committees for approval by faculty or Faculty Senate, whichever is appropriate.

2. This committee also serves as a nominating committee to designate nominees for election to the Faculty Senate and the At-Large Faculty Senate Member.  (See Appendix B, Article 1, Section 2.)  It also oversees election of the succeeding Committee on Committees, and all other committees of the faculty and also faculty representatives to Strategic Planning & Budgeting Committee, and the Faculty Development Committee.  Committee on Committees will assist in the selection process for non-voting faculty representative volunteers on the Board of Trustees Standing Committees.

3. The Committee develops the faculty slate in three stages.

Stage 1:

Membership for those committees with divisional representation (Senate, Curriculum, Faculty Appeals) should be finalized by December using the process defined and communicated in the Division of School.

Stage 2:

In late January – early February nominations should be elicited from the faculty to fill openings on the following committees for the new slate: Committee on Committees, Promotion and Tenure Committee, Strategic Planning and Budgeting Committee, and the Chairperson of Faculty Senate (at-large Senate member). The Committee on Committees will then contact nominated individuals to see if they are willing to run for the committee position for which they have been nominated. Accepted nominations will be posted and elections for these positions will be done in late February – early March.

Stage 3:

Once the positions indicated in the first two stages are filled, the Committee on Committees will distribute the slate to the general faculty and request faculty not already assigned to a committee to indicate their top three choices for committee service. The Committee on Committees will then complete the slate, honoring the choices of the faculty members wherever possible. The completed slate should be published by the end of March.

Membership

The Committee on Committees consists of three voting members of the faculty elected annually by a majority vote of the faculty.

Terms of Office (subject to term limits)

Three three-year memberships, staggered so that there is one returning member each year.  All full-time tenure-track or tenured faculty who are not already assigned to a standing governance committee for the following year are eligible for nomination.
