Academic Standards Committee (ASC)
Purpose
To uphold the academic standards of Mount Saint Mary College.
Responsibilities
- Establish the general standards for academic honors: identify candidates, evaluate nominees, and recommend Ralph and Aquinas Scholars to the Faculty Senate.
- Propose and consider actions that will maintain the high academic standards of Mount Saint Mary College.
- Review the academic performance of students and take appropriate action on those identified as candidates for academic warning, academic probation, or academic dismissal. The Committee will also act on recommendations from the Registrar concerning reinstatement in good standing and those students requiring periodic review of progress.
- Review “I” grade resolutions to ensure appropriate academic status.
- Review and establish policies regarding course load and overload. The Committee may accept, review, and take appropriate action on requests for course overload.
- Receive and take appropriate action on petitions for waiver of College standards and requirements. In all cases requesting waiver of College requirement(s), the Academic Standards Committee will take no action without considering the recommendations of the Chair of the division/school within which the waiver applies and of the Chair of the division/school within which the student’s major falls, when appropriate. These Chairs may assign designees to act for them. In the absence of unanimity among the Chairs and the Committee, the matter will be referred to the Vice President for Academic Affairs for arbitration. Program specific standards and requirements remain within the purview of respective division/school Chairpersons.
- Evaluate and recommend changes in Course and Instructor Rating forms.
- Recommend to the faculty general policies on testing and standards, standards and requirements for advancing studies, granting of degrees, etc.
- Assist the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Registrar in the details of their work relative to maintaining learning and performance standards of the College’s academic programs.
- Implement policies on academic standards as determined by the faculty.
Membership
Four faculty members plus the Registrar. One representative from Student Financial Services and one from the Office of Student Success attend as non-voting members. Either the Assistant/Associate Vice President or the Vice President for Academic Affairs attends as a non-voting member.
Terms of Office for Faculty (subject to term limits)
Two two-year memberships
Two three-year membership
Memberships will be on a rotating basis so that at least two of the four committee members return each year.
