ED 5690 EMERGENT LITERACY

Theories and evidence-based research on language and literacy development will be examined in this course with an emphasis on the relationships of oral language, early reading and writing, through foundational skills, word recognition, language comprehension, bridging processes, and active self-regulation for those beginning their literacy journeys (typically pre-school to grade 2). Master Teacher Candidates will learn how to assess and provide instruction for emergent literacy learners of varying abilities, including those with reading disabilities and English (multi) language learners. Special attention will be placed on locating areas of learner strengths in literacy acquisition, understanding the impact of culture, motivation, and socioeconomic level, and on fostering positive home-school-community relationships. Master Teacher Candidates will learn about communicating assessment results to parents, caregivers, and school personnel. Fieldwork is required.
