ED 5515 DISCIPLINARY AND CRITICAL LITERACIES FOR EXPERIENCED LEARNERS
Master Teacher Candidates will develop expertise on current research addressing literacy development for learners as they become more sophisticated readers and writers within various academic disciplines, typically in grades six through twelve. Candidates will explore assessments and evidence-based instructional strategies designed to support all learners in developing critical disciplinary literacy skills, including specialized vocabulary acquisition, comprehension of discipline-specific texts, fluency in communicating complex ideas, and effective writing tailored to various academic contexts. Special focus will be on reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and visually representing in both print and digital modes. Candidates will develop the skills to design responsive instruction for diverse learners, including advanced learners, learners experiencing challenges, learners with disabilities, and Multilingual learners. Fieldwork is required.
