Order of Layoff within a Department or Program
Layoff within a department or program will proceed in the following order:
- Adjunct faculty
- Special faculty on term appointments
- Untenured faculty
- Tenured faculty
If the VPAA believes that following this order of layoff will in a particular case result in a serious disruption to the academic program, after consultation with the Faculty Senate, the VPAA may recommend to the President that a faculty member who would otherwise be subject to layoff be spared from layoff.
If a choice must be made between two or more tenured faculty, the least senior faculty member (in terms of years of full-time equivalent service to the College) will be laid off. The VPAA may make an exception to this rule if, after consultation with the Faculty Senate, they decide that following the rule would cause serious disruption to the academic program.
If a choice must be made between two or more tenured faculty with the same seniority, the VPAA, after consultation with the Faculty Senate, will make the choice based on the following considerations in the order stated: (1) minimizing disruption to the academic program, (2) the quality of faculty members’ teaching and/or scholarship, and (3) maintaining a diverse faculty with respect to race, ethnic origin, and gender.
