Development Grants
Faculty development, supported by the College, designates growth, either the broadening, deepening, or further integrating of a faculty member’s expertise that benefits the faculty member and the college. Faculty may apply for funding and/or a course release to support these activities.
Faculty should consider the following when applying for a faculty development grant:
- Grant benefits the faculty member, the College and the students
- Request is supportive of teaching responsibilities
- Request is supportive of research and scholarship for the faculty member
- Award results in a specific product or outcome
- Grant assists junior faculty in meeting the requirements for promotion and tenure
- A Faculty Development Grant (FDG) cannot be used for completion of terminal degrees by faculty.
- Grant applications will be judged on the following criteria (in priority order):
a. Is the applicant on track?
An explicit purpose of the grant program is to support those working towards earning tenure.
b. Have they been awarded one or more grants in the past?
When? Were they able to take advantage of it?
c. Is this for scholarship, presentation, or conference attendance?
Scholarship and presentation should take priority.
d. What are the benefits to the College community?
A form of give-back should be detailed in the application - is it?
e. Does this offer new and unique perspectives?
Does the proposal claim to break new ground (must be supported by a statement from a colleague)?
f. Does this include direct engagement with specific/named student(s) or student group?
g. Could they still achieve (some of) their goals on a reduced award (FDC may take Chair Support
response into account)?
