Tenure
To be considered for promotion with continuous tenure, an individual must normally:
- Hold the rank of assistant professor/assistant librarian or higher;
- Be appointed by contract to a tenure-track position;
- Have a minimum of five years of full time teaching or library experience at MSMC or another degree granting institution.
- Meet teaching/learning enhancement, scholarship, and service criteria expected for either the rank of associate professor/associate librarian or professor/librarian as delineated in the section titled “Qualifications for Appointment to Rank.”
An individual must apply for tenure after completing five full years of service including any credited experience from other institutions. Review for continuous tenure may be granted before this time if the individual has the approval of the VPAA in consultation with the Chairperson of the division or school. An individual may not be considered for continuous tenure more than once. In certain circumstances within a division or school, or in the appointment of a senior administrator, tenure may be awarded at appointment.
Until retirement or resignation of the faculty member, an appointment with continuous tenure is terminable by the College for adequate cause. It can also be terminated by the College on account of extraordinary financial emergencies after a notice of not less than twelve months to the faculty member.
Faculty who are denied tenure are granted a non-tenured terminal year. Faculty who chose not to apply for tenure or withdraw their application will not be eligible for a terminal year.
Faculty who are denied tenure because they are unable to demonstrate the expected levels in teaching, scholarship, and service will not be considered for non-tenure track positions.
