POS 3050 A HISTORY OF WESTERN POLITICAL THOUGHT TO 1525

This course highlights developments in political and legal concepts from Classical times to the early-modern period. It assesses pre-1526 modifications to political and legal systems in Western Civilization (Europe, the Middle East, and northern and eastern Africa), to concepts of individuals’ rights and responsibilities before the law and the state, to the role of education in preparing elites for statecraft, and to organized religion’s role in governance and jurisprudence.
