PHL 2063 LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP IN RENAISSANCE FLORENCE

This course examines the nature of love and friendship as it was understood during the Italian Renaissance through the lens of philosophy. Various forms and expressions of friendship will be studied including romantic love, marriage and family life, artist and patron, mentor and protégé, and the citizen in relation to civil society. This course also explores the nature of divine friendship, especially as it was expressed in the Dominican intellectual and spiritual tradition. Special emphasis will be placed on the lives of Saints Dominic, Thomas Aquinas, Catherine of Siena, and other important figures in the history of the Order of Preachers. Travel to Florence is a requirement to complete the course.
