ED 3240 BASICS OF LITERACY FOR ADOLESCENCE EDUCATION

Students preparing to teach biology, chemistry, English, mathematics, social studies, or Spanish at the adolescent level will gain the concepts and skills necessary to support the literacy learning of pupils in grades 7-12. The course will be focused on the role of language in reading; the nature of reading; strategies for assessing pupils' reading levels and for selecting appropriate text material; approaches for supporting struggling readers of pupils who are English language learners; and methods of improving pupils' skills in word attack, comprehension and vocabulary. Field work is required.
