Ranks

Adjunct Lecturer – There are no specific requirements for the rank of adjunct lecturer other than the ability to perform the duties that will be assigned. The rank should be used for part-time instructional personnel who do not hold a terminal degree in their respective field.  Service under the title of adjunct lecturer shall not grant tenure status.

Adjunct Professor – Individuals holding a terminal degree, but serving on a part-time basis, may be assigned the title adjunct professor instead of the title of adjunct lecturer. Adjunct professors shall assume the teaching responsibilities and privileges of professors but are not voting members of the faculty. Service under the title of adjunct professor shall not grant tenure status.

Lecturer - There are no specific requirements for the rank of lecturer other than the ability to perform the duties that will be assigned.  The rank should be used for temporary, full-time, non-tenure-track instructional personnel, with no more than a one-year contract.  They are not voting members of the faculty and may not serve on College committees.  They may serve on Divisional/School committees as designated by Chairs or by vote of the divisional/school faculty.

Professor of Practice - The candidate shall have a minimum of a master's degree or a terminal degree, and shall be full-time but non-tenure track.  Professors of Practice shall assume the teaching responsibilities and privileges of full-time faculty, including the responsibilities covered by the teaching and service rubrics, and may serve on any College or Divisional/School committees except for Senate and Curriculum Committee.  They are voting members of the faculty.

Instructor – The candidate shall have the master’s degree/non-terminal degree, be engaged in study toward obtaining the doctoral/terminal degree, and shall be full-time and tenure-track.  Instructors shall assume the teaching responsibilities and privileges of full-time faculty, including the responsibilities covered by the teaching, service and scholarship rubrics, and may serve on any College or Divisional/School committees.  They are voting members of the faculty.

Assistant Professor – Prior to consideration, the candidate must hold the doctoral/terminal degree, with or without teaching experience.  Assistant professors are tenure-track or tenured, voting members of the faculty, and may serve on any College or Divisional/School committees.

Associate Professor - Prior to consideration, the candidate must have demonstrated consistently effective ability as a teacher and must have done meritorious work in the chosen field, must hold the terminal degree and have completed five years of collegiate academic experience.  The academic experience need not have been at Mount Saint Mary College.  Associate professors are tenure-track or tenured, voting members of the faculty, and may serve on any College or Divisional/School committees.
