English, BA
The English major seeks to enhance understanding of language and literature. It is designed to prepare students for graduate study and for careers in professional fields, including adolescence and childhood education.
Students majoring in English read extensively and critically analyze selected works of literature. They are expected to achieve proficiency in oral and written expression as well as in critical thinking.
Prerequisite to this major is successful completion of ENG 1010 or its equivalent. Students then pursue a minimum of 39 credits (maximum of 40) in ENG courses, with at least 12 credits in 3000 and 4000 level courses, in accordance with the requirements listed below and in consultation with their advisers.
English majors who also pursue Adolescence Certification (grades 7-12) with Teaching Students with Disabilities or Adolescence Certification (grades 7-12) with Middle School Extension (grades 5-6) are reminded that 90 liberal arts credits are required for the Bachelor of Arts in English.

ENG 1040: A grade of C or better is required in ENG 1040 to continue as an English major.
Elective English Courses - 15 Credits (3 of the elective credits must be in a 3000/4000 level ENG course)

Creative Writing Concentration
A Concentration in Creative Writing requires four classes that may include CRW/THR 2020 Writing Workshop: Playwriting; CRW/CMA 3055 Writing Workshop: Screenwriting for Film & Television; CRW/ENG 3300 Writing Workshop: Creative Non-Fiction; CRW/ENG 3310 Writing Workshop: Narrative Journalism; CRW/ENG 3410 Writing Workshop: Fiction; CRW/ENG 4028 Writing Workshop: Poetry; or an approved 3-credit independent study. Students must also submit a portfolio of their work after completion of the four classes.
