Federal Direct Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS)

A parent of a dependent undergraduate student may borrow a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan. Borrowing limits depend on when federal loans were first taken:

Continuing/Legacy families: If the parent or student had any federal direct loan (subsidized, unsubsidized, or PLUS) disbursed before July 1, 2026, you may continue to borrow up to cost of attendance minus other aid for up to 3 additional academic years or the student completes the program, whichever comes first.

NEW families: If no Federal Direct Loan was disbursed prior to July 1, 2026, borrowers are limited to $20,000 per year and a $65,000 lifetime limit per student, combined across all parents borrowing for the same student.
