SCI 3040 PHONETICS AND PHONOLOGY
This course examines first the types of sounds made by humans, particularly in regards to oral communication (acoustical phonetics), then the ways in which these sounds combine and interact to create meaning (phonology). Students will learn a certain amount of technical information, which will enable them to transcribe speech with which they are unfamiliar (for example in linguistic fieldwork), as well as to formulate rules of sound alter(n)ation within languages.
