BIO 3070 ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY OF SPEECH AND HEARING MECHANISM
Study of the anatomy and physiology of speech production and speech perception. Emphasis is on structures and mechanisms related to normal respiration, phonation, articulation, resonation, hearing, and neurology. Communication disorders are addressed. This course is designed to provide a functional knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of speech and hearing mechanisms. Attention is given to the specific structures, muscles, and function of respiration, phonation, articulation, and resonance. An overview is also provided for the nervous system structures and pathways related to speech production and speech perception. Changes and impairments in anatomical and physiological functioning resulting in communication disorders are discussed. Through lectures and active learning experiences, students will be expected to (a) identify, describe and display an understanding of the primary anatomical structures associated with speech and hearing, (b) demonstrate knowledge of how these structures function to produce speech, language, hearing, and perception, and (c) communicate how knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanism can be applied to understand communication disorders.
