HIS 3200 THE ATLANTIC WORLD

This course examines how the Atlantic Ocean connected the histories of Europe, Asia, and the Americas from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries. It will show how Europeans increasingly move ideas, items, institutions and individuals among these landmasses to create new realities and new concepts throughout the globe. The class will study how exploration, colonization, and commerce produced new notions of slavery, economy, and politics that transformed life on all four continents. In so doing, it will show how the Atlantic Ocean has influenced the nature of the modern world.
