Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful set of tools that has the ability to enhance all areas of society, including education. Mount Saint Mary College recognizes the importance of students gaining skills and experience with these tools. As with any set of tools, it is imperative that students utilize these tools in a responsible manner. The following guidelines apply to the use of AI in Mount Saint Mary College courses:

  1. Course instructors determine if and how artificial intelligence (AI) tools are allowed for use in individual courses. Students shall consult the course syllabus and/or contact the course instructor to determine how AI tools may or may not be used in their courses.

  2. If AI tools are allowed to be used in course, students are responsible for providing correct and accurate attribution of the sources used, and providing a disclosure statement. Failure to provide correct and accurate attribution may be considered plagiarism and a violation of this Academic Honesty Policy.

  3. The use of AI tools for an assignment or in a course where it is expressly prohibited may be considered cheating and a violation of this Academic Honesty Policy.

  4. Faculty may use AI detection programs to determine if a student may have violated this Academic Honesty Policy in regards to the use of AI. Students suspected of using AI tools in violation of this policy or guidelines set forth by the course syllabi or written guidance by the instructor shall be subject to due process (below).

  5. Uploading course materials into an AI program without explicit permission from the instructor may be considered a violation of this Academic Honesty Policy.

Students should familiarize themselves with course policies regarding authorized or unauthorized use of AI to avoid academic dishonesty. When any doubt exists about whether AI use is authorized for any assignment or course contribution, students are expected to confirm and document any and all uses of AI with the course instructor prior to submitting the work for assessment.
