HIS 1012 NURSING AMERICAN HISTORY, 1861-1945

This course explores how the emergence of the trained, professional American nurse intersects with the development of ‘modern’ American and global history. Throughout the term we will consider how American nursing practices and values influenced and were influenced by national and international wars, disasters and epidemics, social movements and cultural prejudice, and urban and rural nursing initiatives. Designed for the future nurse, History and Social Sciences Majors, and the curious undergraduate, participants will discuss personal and scholarly coverage of events and processes connected to American nursing’s historical development. In so doing, students in this curriculum will consider what the nursing experiences of the past can teach us about the nursing and health-related concerns of the present and the future.
