ENG 4160 DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE

A socio-linguistic approach to the history of the English language, from Old English to the present-day English dialects spoken throughout the world, focusing particularly on the early stages of the language. Utilizing linguistic theories and methods, a range of primary source materials, and personal experience, students analyze the influence of social, political, economic, and cultural factors on the evolution of syntactical, phonological, and morphological structures of English.
